Why Jiu-Jitsu? Personally, I love
Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I had been searching for a great equalizer
since I was a kid being bullied at school. As I got older and my
thoughts changed to "self defense" I knew I wanted to do
something safe, that didn't hurt myself or others, but gave me a
way of life to protect myself. Finally, and yes, older still, I
want an activity that keeps me in great shape, especially the
core! All of this is encompassed in Gracie Jiu Jitsu and it
gives you a great perspective on life. I have found it a very
calm form of effortless self-defense where one doesn't have to
use muscle to control the situation but technique and skill.
Like me, you probably won't know until you try it how much FUN
it can be. And the best part is everything is done gradually.
The way it gets you in shape, and even the learning process is
done over time so you won't feel overwhelmed.

More on Jiu Jitsu from the Pedro Sauer
website:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a highly effective
and comprehensive system of standing and ground defense
techniques utilizing rules of leverage.
Many real life examples show most street attacks will
end up on the ground. This makes
BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) an ideal martial art for theses
situations which demand simple and effective responses.
Individuals will be able to train realistically in a safe
environment. Notwithstanding it's
self-defense potential, BJJ offers a tremendous workout
emphasizing aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, making it an
enjoyable workout for women, men, and children regardless of
athletic ability. The greatest
advantage Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers is the ability for a
smaller person to learn principles of leverage that will assist
them in defending against or defeating a larger opponent.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques were refined
and innovated by the late Grand Master Helio Gracie who weighed
no more that 145 pounds. Master
Gracie focused on using only techniques that involved the use of
very little strength but emphasized leveraging and positioning
the body to defend attacks and control a harmful situation.
The class will
develop your core muscles as you develop escapes and proper
positioning. The other side of your core progress will come by
moving around your partner, and physically moving your partner
themselves. Inherent to the regimen is a variety of isometric
movements that activate the whole body, particularly the
stabilizer muscles. Grappling also builds a tremendous sense of
balance, weight distribution, and tactile movement.
Within each class we'll warm up as a group with stretching,
tumbling exercises, and light calisthenics. From there a
technique portion will be taught where you'll receive specific
movements that create submissions, throws, and escapes. Finally,
we'll end class with cooperative play to test out what we've
learned through timing games and "rolling."
We are proud and most fortunate to have been
selected as one of three Pedro Sauer Brasilian Jiu Jitsu
Affiliate programs in the State of Oregon. This is one of the
most legitimate forms of Gracie Jiu Jitsu you'll find. True to
our name we have been blessed to learn directly from Professor
Sauer's child hood friend, Professor Anibal Lobo.
